Akin Famewo made his playing comeback for Charlton Athletic today – with manager Lee Bowyer saying it will take a couple of days to fully assess the defender’s prospects of being available against Gillingham on Saturday.
The on-loan Norwich City centre-back has only featured twice since the end of October due to injuries.
But Famewo clocked up 62 minutes for the Addicks’ U23s in their 4-3 loss at Bristol City this afternoon.
Charlton kept a clean sheet in last weekend’s 2-0 victory at Rochdale, easing the pressure slightly for immediate defensive reinforcements.
“We’ll see how he is tomorrow and Thursday,” said Bowyer. “He got 60 minutes in today, which is the most important thing and came through okay. It’s whether he gets any reaction tomorrow or Thursday.
“He didn’t come off injured. I think the next 48 hours are important. Of course we want to bring him back into the fold but again we have to weigh up what is best, there are still a lot of games to go. If we rush him back too soon he’ll break down and we’ll all regret it. We have to handle it the right way.”
