With Norwich City doing their bit on Friday night, by beating Swansea at Carrow Road they ensured they would remain top of the Championship table with 10 games to go.
And it’s now probably the weekend it became officially 2 out of 3 for automatic promotion, given the chasing teams’ dropped points on Saturday.
Daniel Farke’s Canaries were able to enjoy reaching 72 points and extending their lead at the top on Friday night, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Swansea at Carrow Road – Emi Buendia scoring the wonderful, decisive goal on 54 minutes.
That took City five points clear of Leeds United (67) in second, while the gap to Sheffield United in third was extended to seven.
However, the Blades picked up a 2-0 win at Bramall Lane against their Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United on Saturday lunchtime – taking them to 68 points and returning them to four points behind the leaders.
A goal in each half, as well as the 28th minute dismissal of Millers skipper Will Vaulks made it a routine afternoon for Chris Wilder’s promotion chasers with Rotherham boss Paul Warne unable to do his boyhood team Norwich a favour.
And then Leeds followed suit, as former Canaries loanee Patrick Bamford scored just nine minutes into their clash at Bristol City – the only goal at Ashton Gate, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side closed back to within two points of Norwich. Leeds are yet to drop a single point this season, in games where they have scored first.
