According to reports published by Teamtalk and other sites, West Ham are keen on a deal to bring Norwich City's USA International striker Josh Sargent to the London Stadium in the new year.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is said to be seeking reinforcements to his attacking options, with the club at risk of relegation from the Premier League, and with an aging strikeforce in his squad.

However, according to the latest reports emerging it’s believed that the £20 million asking price reported to have been set by Norwich is proving to be a major stumbling block in getting an agreement over the line.

It is said that West Ham aren’t currently willing to pay that much for the player ahead of the January window, which is therefore likely to prevent a deal from happening in this transfer window.

Norwich Head Coach Philippe Clement will be keen to keep Sargent due to his importance to the team, with the US international holding a contract with the Norfolk outfit until the summer of 2028.

It’s understood that the Hammers are willing to seek other opportunities as long as the £20 million asking price remains in place.

Norwich have no immediate incentive to lower their demands, particularly with the club in a fight against relegation themselves.

Norwich City's Belgian head coach Philippe Clement believes their home win over Southampton provided a "clear signal" that the team are making progress towards their initial goal of Championship survival in 2026.

Having lost every game at Carrow Road this season prior to the new Head Coah's arrival, the Canaries have now taken an much improved total of seven points from the last three games at home at Carrow Road.

Summer signing from Lincoln City Jovon Makama scored both goals in the club's 2-1 win against Southampton on Saturday to take his total to six for the season so far, making him joint top scorer at the club alongside Josh Sargent, who was forced to miss the match at the weekend due to concussion protocols.

"All the players who were not in the selection because they're injured or were not selected, they were so happy and were celebrating in the dressing room," Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"You feel how much it meant to all this group of players who have had a lot of knocks the last couple of months.

"It was a very important victory but it's also important not to go in a state of satisfaction, there are still a lot of games to play this season, we have a lot of work to do to make the team better and better and better.

"But there is a clear signal that the team is on the right track for the moment. I see a good progression in this short three weeks together."

Clement said his team had been tactically aware in defence and also showed their ability going forwards.

"They played a really great game with a lot of energy, desire and doing the right things together, the composure to play between lines, to create spaces for ourselves and create more chances than the two goals," he added.

"He [Makama] is a really interesting player. He never played at this level [before] and still needs to learn a lot, but he has the desire to become better - so I'm on top of him to make him better."

There was a key moment at the other end of the pitch in the first half when Vladan Kovacevic dived to his left to push away a penalty from Southampton's Adam Armstrong with the score 0-0.

"He has the quality to save penalties because he is so explosive," Clement said.

"That was a massive moment in the game - if you go behind, things are more difficult because Southampton are a team that is really good on the ball, with a lot of composure and players of Premier League experience."

Norwich are away to Preston North End next weekend and Clement hopes not having a midweek match will enable them to build the fitness of some of their injured players like defender Jose Cordoba who made his return from the subsittues bench on Saturday having missed the previous 13 games.

"If we have to play every three days, they are not ready yet for that, but they can have a good training week where we have more control in what they are doing.

"I'm sure, there will be [some smiling faces at the training ground this week], but there will also be some tired faces."

Clement confirmed in his pre-match press conference today at Colney that Josh Sargent will unfortunately be unavailable and miss out this weekend as he follows a concussion protocol following his first half exit at Sheffield United on Tuesday.

The American had a rough day or two in the immediate aftermath and will now have to observe clear guidelines before he is available for duty.

Captain Kenny McLean is also seen as a doubt for the Saints' visit after a 'blocked hip' saw him withdrawn as a precuation half time in the game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
